The scene
Half past three on a Thursday afternoon in late September, Pratap Nagar, Nagpur. It's the fourth day of calls. Kamala is at the dining table in the front room with the Lokmat and the Hitavada open side by side, reading glasses pushed up into her hair. The ceiling fan is on, and there's the usual scooter and auto traffic out on the road. A pressure cooker of toor dal is on the gas for the evening meal. She didn't want any of this. Priya set it up from Toronto and Kamala has said, more than once, "I know when I'm being managed." She's polite in the way a headmistress is polite: short, dry, and waiting for you to waste her time. She warms up over the call without ever saying so.
