Accessibility Statement
Last updated 27 September 2026 · Applies to zika.care and the Zika Care waitlist
In plain words
- We aim for this website to meet WCAG 2.2 at level AA.
- Every call on the site has a full written transcript, and the player works from the keyboard.
- Motion is reduced automatically if your device asks for it.
- We haven't yet had an independent audit or tested with every assistive technology. If something doesn't work for you, please tell us.
1. Our commitment
Zika Care exists for people with hearing loss, unclear speech, low vision and changing memory, and for the families who support them. The website should work for them too. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. Full conformance can only be confirmed by manual testing with assistive technologies and expert review, which we plan to commission before launch.
2. What we've built in
- Full transcripts for every call, with speaker names, timings and descriptions of background sounds.
- An audio player operable by keyboard, with labelled controls and a readable position.
- No autoplaying sound. Audio only plays when you press play.
- Animations respect the “reduce motion” setting, and show a still frame that explains each step.
- Semantic headings, landmarks and a “skip to content” link.
- Visible focus indicators and text colours chosen for contrast.
- Text that can be resized to 200% without loss of content, and layouts that work down to 320 pixels wide.
- Questions and answers that open and close without JavaScript.
3. Known limitations
- The scroll-driven explanation on larger screens changes as you scroll. The same information is available as text beside it, and on smaller screens as a simple list.
- The example calls include deliberately phone-quality audio, which some listeners may find harder to hear. The transcript contains everything said.
- We haven’t yet tested with every combination of screen reader and browser.
4. The service itself
The Zika Care service is voice-only for the older person by design, and is built around hearing, speech, sight and memory differences. See Hearing, speech & sight. The family app will target the same WCAG 2.2 AA standard.
5. Tell us about a problem
Write to access@zika.care with the page and what went wrong. We’ll reply within two working days, and if we can’t fix it quickly we’ll get you the information another way.
